The Breakup

They both agreed they needed to talk.

“The Talk”.

They both knew what it meant as soon as they hung up the phone.  Their fate was sealed as soon as she set foot into his house.  An end of an era.  It was a whirlwind romance that everyone knew was going to fail, but one that everyone secretly rooted for.

There was no yelling, screaming, or cursing.  No harsh words or even bitter tones.  Just soft words and sad smiles.

She felt her eyes begin to betray her.  She had told herself that she wasn’t going to cry.  She choked out her last goodbye as two traitorous tears slid down her cheeks.  She turned her back to him so that he couldn’t see the storm that was about to break forth.  She felt her very soul scream in agony as she took those first steps away from him.  Her heart begged her to turn around, pleaded with her to stay.  As her pride forced one foot in front of the other and kept her jaw wired shut.

His face was set as hard as stone as she said her last goodbye.  The only thing that betrayed him was his eyes.  His eyes glistened as he held his tears at bay.  His eyes begged her not to go as she said her last goodbye.  He felt his soul scream in agony as she took those first steps away from him.  His heart begged him to call her name, it pleaded with him to not let her go.  As his pride nailed his feet to the ground and kept his jaw wired shut.

The soft click of the front closing hit them both like a jolt of lightening.  She ran to her car half blind with tears as he walked towards his Xbox, wiping away a single tear.
